Sometimes,‌ bad design isn’t ugly,‌ it’s invisible.‌

I once ran a quick audit for an ecommerce store that sold premium skincare. Great products, nice ads, and beautiful branding.

But there was one small problem, literally small.

Their product descriptions were set in a 12px font.

The design looked sleek on a desktop, sure. But on mobile, the copy that actually sold the product was barely legible. Customers had to pinch and zoom just to read a benefit. Most didn’t bother.

When we bumped the font size to 16px, improved spacing, and increased contrast, conversion jumped by 18% in one week.

That’s when it hit me: Sometimes, you don’t need a new ad campaign, you just need readable text.

Here’s what I recommend checking on your site today:

  • Font size: Minimum 16px for body copy, 18–20px for older audiences.

  • Line spacing: 1.5x for mobile readability.

  • Contrast: Aim for a 4.5:1 contrast ratio.

  • Hierarchy: Make your value props pop. Use bold or colour accents for the key selling lines.

If you think design doesn’t affect conversion, ask yourself: Would you buy from a brand whose website makes you squint?

My take: Don’t let “minimalist” design hide your sales.
