The Supplement Industry Has a Secret. Most Brands Never Figure It Out

After 13 years in the industry and thousands of tests, Bobby Hewitt shares his secret to success in the supplement industry.

People do not buy supplements the way they buy other products.

That is one of the most important things Bobby Hewitt, founder of Creative Thirst and one of the most experienced conversion rate experts in the supplement space, has learned in 13 years of working exclusively in this industry.

Think about it for a second. When you buy a pair of shoes, you decide quickly. Do you like the style? Does it come in your size? Is the price right?

A supplement is completely different. You are putting something in your body. Nobody sees you take it. Nobody compliments you on it. You buy it on faith that it will work, that the brand knows what it is doing, and that the ingredients are what they say they are.

That buying decision requires a different kind of marketing. And most supplement brands are still using the wrong playbook.

We had Bobby on the Pro Marketer Podcast, and he shared things most supplement brands do not know. Here is what stood out.

Your Product Page Is Probably Doing It Wrong

Bobby has tested thousands of pages. He said something that most ecommerce brands would never consider.

Your image carousel is not just a place to show the product. It summarizes your entire brand story.

Most supplement brands use it the standard way. Front of the bottle. Back of the bottle. Maybe a lifestyle shot. That is not enough for a buyer who is buying on faith.

Bobby's approach is to treat those five or six carousel images like a condensed version of the full product page. Address:

  • The problem the customer has

  • How the product works

  • Why it is different

  • The key benefit

The second thing he would change on most product pages is where he places testimonials. Most brands push reviews far down the page. Bobby recommends placing your best testimonial above the offer section because, for a new visitor who doesn't know your brand yet, trust has to come before the buy button.

Ugly Pages Beat Pretty Pages

They build value before they make an offer.

Brands that don't need to discount have already convinced buyers before the sale with strong content, clear ingredient or product information, real reviews from real people, and a brand story that makes customers feel like they are buying into something, not just a product.

When a customer already trusts you and wants what you sell, price becomes a much smaller barrier.

They use loyalty instead of discounts to reward customers.

Instead of cutting prices for everyone, high-performing brands reward customers who have already bought. Early access to new products. Points that build up over time. A free gift at a certain spend threshold.

These create the same feeling of getting a deal without training your entire audience to wait for one.

They create real urgency instead of manufactured urgency.

A limited-edition product that runs out, a seasonal item available only once a year, and a collaboration with an end date.

These drive purchases without touching your margins because the scarcity is real.

They focus on retention over acquisition.

Brands that do not discount are usually the ones investing heavily in keeping the customers they already have. Better post-purchase emails. Replenishment reminders. Personalized recommendations. A community around the brand.

A retained customer pays full price every time they come back. A discount-trained customer never pays full price.

AI Is Making Your Customer Smarter Before They Find You

Bobby made a point most supplement brands aren't thinking about yet.

Your customer is now using AI to research before they ever land on your page. They are asking detailed questions. Getting detailed answers. Doing back-and-forth conversations with ChatGPT or Claude about ingredients, dosages, and what works.

By the time they reach your product page, they are more educated than ever. They will spot vague claims. They will question anything that sounds like marketing noise. They will look for specifics.

The brands that win with this new buyer have detailed, honest, specific content across every touchpoint. Those still using generic benefit claims will lose that customer to a brand that took the time to go deeper.
