Two things happened in the past month that every ecommerce brand owner should know about.
Neither of them made front-page news. But both of them are quietly affecting how brands get found online right now. If you don't know about them, you could be losing traffic without understanding why.
Here is what happened and what to do about it.

Change One: Google Is Penalising Mass AI-Generated Content
On August 18, Google finished rolling out its third spam update of 2026.
That means if your brand has used AI to produce large amounts of content quickly and published it with little human input or editing, your rankings may have dropped in the last few weeks. SEO experts who analyzed the update found that Google is removing mass-generated AI content from search results.
Not all AI content. But specifically, the kind that was clearly churned out at volume with no real thought behind it.
This matters for ecommerce brands because many teams started using AI to speed up content production over the last year. That is smart. But there is a difference between using AI as a tool to help you write better content and using it to flood your site with thin, generic pages.
If your brand saw a drop in rankings in mid to late August, start by looking at your content-generation method.
The solution is not to stop using AI. The solution is to make sure every piece of content you publish has real value, real information, and a real human perspective. That is what Google is rewarding. That is what it has always rewarded, even if enforcement is getting sharper.

Change Two: Google AI Reports Are Now Available to Everyone
This is good news.
Google started rolling out a generative AI performance report in Google Search Console in June 2026, and as of August 31, it's available to everyone worldwide.
This means you can now see exactly how your website is performing within Google's AI-generated search results.
This is a big deal. We have talked in previous newsletters about how more and more people are getting their answers directly from AI summaries at the top of Google search results without clicking through to any website. Now you can measure whether your brand is appearing in those summaries.
If you have not already, go into Google Search Console and look for the AI performance report. It will show you which of your pages are being pulled into AI Overviews, how many impressions you are getting from them, and how that is trending over time.
If your AI Overview impressions are low, that is your signal to start producing clearer, more structured, more specific content that directly answers the questions your customers are asking. That is what Google's AI pulls from.

What Both of These Mean Together
Here is the bigger picture.
Google is getting much better at telling the difference between content that helps people and content that was produced just to rank. The brands that have been doing the right thing all along, publishing useful, specific, well-written content that answers real questions, are being rewarded. The ones that took shortcuts are being corrected.
Trust beats volume. Generic AI copy loses. Proof, sharp structure, founder voice, and real examples win.
September is also a high-intent month. People return from summer, review budgets, compare vendors, and plan for Q4.
If there was ever a good time to get your content right, it is right now.
